Looking Closer

Day 59

As I attempt to take a picture each day for the whole year, I am beginning to notice things that I have never really noticed before, for example those weeds you see by the road. Today I decided to stop and take a closer look, from a distance they look like good old ordinary weeds but up close they look totally different, almost like feathers, soft and fluffy. I wonder if birds use the soft bits for their nests, that would be fitting, for something that from a distance looks rough and prickly but is actually a bit soft and cushy and will make a comfy home for baby birds. I think a lot of things are like that, they look one way from a distance but up close, completely different. How many times have I rushed to judgement, on everything from people to places to things? In the future I will try to remember these weeds and how they are so different up close, especially if something disappoints upon first look.

I am particularly struck by the beauty of your picture of the "weeds" and your words about them. As God graciously begins to open our eyes and begins imparting His precious nuggets of wisdom to us, as we ready to truly acknowledge Him in our journey, we begin to see.
He lights our way and delights our hearts with truth.
God knows what those "weeds" are; why He made them and what birds or creatures He's given instruction to use bits and pieces of them for their nesting materials. I've been struck in recent years about how we humans go about "cleaning" up our yards in the fall of leaves, dried flower stems and the like so that our yards look tidy. And then I watch as the days grow warmer at the tail end of winter when all manner of birds are in our yard looking for fodder for their nests. Thank God He's provided the "weeds" for them.
We are beautifully instructed in Proverbs 3: 5-8:
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the LORD and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your body
And refreshment to your bones."

Fear, in the above passage, means to be in awe, astonished at, reverence, honor and respect. I am in awe of the ONE who made the "weeds."
